DWI Arrests in New Rochelle

NEW ROCHELLE POLICE NEW YEARS DWI CHECKPOINT

Over the New Years holiday New Rochelle Police made several DWI arrests but believe that drivers are starting to use designated drivers more frequently as about 40 percent of the drivers stopped by the New Rochelle Police were designated drivers.

The New Rochelle police stopped approximately 200 motorists at a DWI check point at the Hutchinson River Parkway and North Avenue in early hours of New Year's Day. Of those 200 hundred drivers only two people were arrested for drunk driving.


NEW ROCHELLE DWI LEANDRA'S LAW ARRESTS

The people who were arrested included a 49 year old woman who was charged with a felony for driving while intoxicated with a person age 15 or younger inside the vehicle. This is commonly referred to as the "Leandra's Law". Under Leandra's Law a person may be charged with felony DWI, even if it is their first DWI arrest, solely because they were driving drunk with a person age 15 or younger inside the vehicle.

Also arrested and charged with felony driving while intoxicated under Leandra's Law was a man who had his 14-year-old son in the car. The police administered a field sobriety and chemical test to the man at the DWI checkpoint.


NEW ROCHELLE MISDEMEANOR DWI ARREST

A twenty year old man was arrested for driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor. He was stopped by police at the DWI checkpoint and he also failed field sobriety tests and a chemical test.
